Passionate about technology, the industrial world, production, and design, Major General Tardif first joined the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers, from which he graduated in 1991. He then joined the Air Force Academy.

He started his training as a mechanic officer and then became a transport pilot. He progressed through the various levels of command, eventually becoming, in 2016, the commander of Air Base 186 in Nouméa, New Caledonia.

In 2020, he became the National Representative of the French Armed Forces for Operation Chammal against the Islamic State, which represents the French component of the international operation INHERENT RESOLVE. This operation aimed to provide military support to the Iraqi Forces engaged in the fight against Daesh. As the commander of Chammal, he ensured the proper employment of French forces and fulfilled responsibilities within the EMA regarding civil-military interactions.

In 2021, he was appointed Deputy Chief of the Air and Space Force Activity, and later Inspector of the Air and Space Force.

In March 2025, he succeeded Philippe Morales as Major General of the French Air and Space Force
