Passenger traffic soars 28% at Egyptian airports in 2023

The number of passengers traveling through Egypt’s airports soared to nearly 47 million in 2023, a 28 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry.

At the same time, 365,000 flights passed through Egyptian airports, a 23 percent increase from the previous year.

Cairo International Airport topped the list of busiest airports in Egypt, accommodating over 26 million passengers via 198,000 flights, the ministry’s data shows.

Other busy airports include Hurghada International Airport, which received 8.7 million passengers on 60,000 flights, and Sharm El-Sheikh International Airport, which welcomed 5.9 million passengers on over 43,000 flights. Additionally, Borg El-Arab International Airport saw more than two million passengers on 17,000 flights in 2023.

Minister of Civil Aviation Abbas Helmy highlighted that these achievements align with Egypt’s plan to boost tourism.

Egypt received 11.7 million tourists in 2022, up from eight million in 2021, marking a 46.2 per cent increase.

As many as seven million tourists visited Egypt during the first half of 2023, with officials initially expecting the number to reach 15 million in the entire year.
